Swahili word ujamaa means 'extended family', 'brotherhood' or 'socialism'; as a political concept, it asserts that a person becomes a person through the people or community.
On today’s episode, we’re going to get musical. To start things off, we’re going to drop some knowledge about music. 
Healthy foods and lifestyles are the topics for episode 3, which were discussed by Iyeshima Harris. Our U Too segment asked what people do every day to stay healthy. Lastly, our Fact of the Day was about Huey P. Newton.

Episode 3 of Girls Empowered is dedicated to the topic of Body Image and how having a negative body image can lead to eating disorders. We will discuss the impact that media has on body image, how companies perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards, how women and teens are disproportionately targeted by them, what some companies are doing to combat this, and what people can do to maintain body positivity.

Growth In Our DNA is a short film documentary featuring Frances Perez-Rodriguez and Karen Washington, two urban farmers who work throughout different community farms in The Bronx, in New York City. In the year 2009, La Finca del Sur, “Farm of The South” was transformed from an empty lot to a thriving, community-led farm. The goal of the farm was to address issues of food access, environmental justice and community empowerment for women of color. This meeting point has become a garden to not only grow food and community but to address the root causes of broader systematic inequalities and global justice.

Laura hails from the beautiful Rio De Janeiro where she got an auspicious start in music. At the age of 15, Laura struck her first record deal with Universal Music Brazil. Her debut album, “Made in Rio,” garnered her acclaim throughout Brazil and landed her the opportunity to open up for Demi Lovato. Tune in to hear Laura's journey from Brazil to the Big Apple. She will also be performing some of the tracks from her sophomore album, "Reason to Stay."
