Clip of the Week: Stonewall + 50

The United States is a country that prides itself in being “the land of the free,” but its history is far from perfect. Over the years, minority groups have come together to create social movements like Black Lives Matter, Feminism, March For Our Lives, #MeToo and the Gay Rights movement–just to name a few. Change is inevitable, but someone must take the first step forward to pave the way for future generations.

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, located in Greenwich Village, was raided by police officers, and members of the LGBT community, like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, fought back. Today, the Stonewall Riots are also known as the Stonewall Uprising or the Stonewall Rebellion and this pivotal moment paved the way to the Gay Liberation movement.

On this special episode of Gay USA co-hosts Andy Humm and Ann Northrop kicked off Stonewall’s 50th Anniversary and Pride Month with a panel discussion featuring Eric Marcus, author of Making Gay History; Martin Boyce, Stonewall veteran; Karla Jay, author, professor and activist; and Jamie Adams, Stonewall Monument Park Ranger.
