It started as a special episode of MNN’s “Gotta Run with Will.” Now the short doc “Save the Putnam Nature Trail” has been chosen among hundreds of submissions to be featured in the Northeast Film Festival and the Golden Door International Film Festival, both to open in September, with another likely screening at  the Bronx's International Film Festival later this year.

MNN producers Will Sanchez ("Gotta Run's" executive producer), Vanessa Cordova-Corwin and Monica McKane-Sanchez collaborated to make "Save the Putnam Nature Trail," an eight-minute documentary short that's part of an effort to stop a New York City Parks Department plan to pave a one-and-a-half-mile dirt path that runs through Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The film made its festival debut last year at the International Film festival Manhattan, where it was honored in the category of "Best Indie Producer."

“This has been the most challenging and personally satisfying work I’ve done,” Sanchez wrote remarked in a 2013 installment of MNN’s monthly blog series “MNN Diaries." “I used my experiences as a Community Board activist, my technical skills, and my entree to the running community to pull together dozens of voices and hundreds of clips to tell a powerful story of environmental justice.”

Check out this clip of the last 15 seconds of the award-winning doc, and stay tuned for more news about this "little doc that can," as Sanchez calls it. Big congrats!
