This Week on MNN: Latin Music

Join us as we recognize the contributions of the inspirational Latin Americans who make the United States all that it is.  This week we focus on Latin music and dance. Learn about Latin Jazz great Machito Grillo, listen to latin urban music Reggaeton and get some Boogaloo dance tips from the professionals. 

Latin Icons Past and Present host Gilda Miros talks with Mario Grillo Jr. about his dad Francisco Raul Gutierrez or Frank “Machito” Grillo, as he was known. In the 1940’s Machito led one of New York’s most influential latin jazz bands. Machito and his Afro-Cuban Orchestra were the first New York group to add a conga to their rhythm section. Listen to Glida and Mario discuss Machito’s musical and see an array of vintage videos clips and legendary photos. 

Diamante has been showcasing local latin artists on MNN for over 20 years. With their colorful crew of rotating hosts Diamante ensures a good time for all. On this episode host Robert Maisonet introduces Reggaeton artist Destin AD and freestyle artists Jackeline Rose and Alex of Latin Nation. Dance the day away with Diamante only on MNN.

Boogaloo in the City is a program dedicated to preserving the history and educating viewers about the art of Latin Boogaloo music and dance. In this special host Elena Martinez, Co-Artistic Director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center, moderates a panel discussion that includes music producer DJ Bongohead, scholar, writer  Oliver Wang, and DJ Turmix, who specializes in Boogaloo music.
