The story of Instagram is very similar as many of the big social media apps.  Beginning as a startup developed in San Francisco by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, it was launched on iOS devices in October 2010 as a photo-sharing service.  Its rapid adoption by the public granted more funding and in 2012 the Android version saw the light of the day.  Few days after, the company was acquired by Facebook Inc. and later in that year developed the website profiles with limited capabilities. From there Instagram has grown as one of the major social media platforms and added functionalities like video sharing and stories, whit the implementation of live broadcasting and IGTV for posting of longer videos.

For independent media producers, Instagram Live has become a great tool.  If you have a mobile device with the app installed, an Instagram account an Internet connection, then you're ready to broadcast live at any moment from virtually anywhere.

One aspect to have in mind is privacy, which the platform define as visibility.  Instagram allows your profile to be "public", which means anybody in the social network can follow you without your previous approval and the content you publish is also viewable by anybody on Internet that knows your profile name or @; or "private" in which case only people you approve can follow you and see your content.  If you want to reach a wider audience, a public profile has better chance to do so, just be mindful that everything you publish is available for the world to see.
