Represent NYC: Is New York’s Property Tax System Racial Bias?

Does our State's property tax system favor the affluent over the working and middle-class? Some say yes, and earlier this year, a lawsuit was filed against the city claiming that not all properties are assessed equally, and that the system is unfair to minorities and the poor.

On this episode of “Represent NYC, Council Member Helen Rosenthal talks with Honorable Jonathan Lippman, former Chief Judge of the State of New York Court of Appeals; and Martha E. Stark, Policy Director for Tax Equity Now New York and Professor at the NYU-Wagner School of Public Affairs, about the root of the extensive tax inequity problem here in the city and what needs to be done to fix it.

This episode originally aired in July 2017.
