Represent NYC: Housing and Rent Laws

September 29, 2019

In late Spring, New Yorkers were worried about the future of housing in NYC. Many feared homelessness as New York’s rent-regulation laws were about to expire (June 15, 2019). Nearly 2.4 million people were at risk of losing their homes, if a new affordable housing bill was not approved.

Just one day short of the expiring rent regulation laws, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the “Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019.” The bill includes a cap on a unit’s security deposit, illegal rent hikes, and MCI regulations, among other tenant protections. Despite the bill having huge support, many remain confused on what the bill actually covers.

Join Represent NYC’s guest-host and Assembly Member, Yuh-Line Niou, as she discusses New York’s Rent Regulation laws with Legal Aid Society Staff Attorney, Ellen Davidson; Good Old Lower East Side Rent Regulated Housing Organizer, Elyse Highstreet; and Mobilization for Justice, Inc. Staff Attorney, Meaghan Whyte.

Aired September 29th, 2019.
