MNN's Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, the United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030.
The SDGs provide a blueprint for human progress and a clear call to action for businesses to contribute to a better future.
The COVID-19 crisis has posed a huge challenge to society and has led to a reversal of progress on a number of SDGs: for example, over 100 million additional people have been pushed into extreme poverty, 1.6 billion children have missed school during the last year and the pandemic has widened gender inequalities with others.
Public access media and media education can help accelerate progress towards delivering the SDGs as society builds back better.
What’s MNN’s role?
MNN is dedicated to localizing the SDGs through our media education, production, programming, and facility usage through serving the New York City community.
Furthermore, MNN plays a significant role in the global approach by connecting many of New York City's immigrant communities with their countries and cultures of origin. These include Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, the Filipino-American community, and the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean-Boriken, among others.
Additionally, MNN provides production assistance, facilities, and airtime for some of the most marginalized New Yorkers addressing some of the most pressing issues including housing and tenant rights, public education, criminal justice and prison reform, accessibility for those with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ rights.
MNN’s produced programs also provide the only space for interviews and debates with every candidate on the ballot in Manhattan’s local elections as well as weekly updates on political issues affecting New Yorkers.
Here are some of the SDG targets and ways in which MNN’s programs align:
