This Week on MNN

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, this week we pay homage to the indefatigable American spirit of perseverance and limitless imagination.  On this week’s episode of “The Facts,” Lenore Von Stein talks to psychologists about post-trauma resilience, while “Gotta Run with Will” hosts an athlete drawn to running as a means of rebounding after personal conflict. And in celebration of just how far the human spirit can imagine, and dream, “GingerNewYork” features two creative dynamos—an international fine art photographer, and triple-threat singer/songwriter/dancer.

Each episode of “The Facts” is either a music-story (using composed and improvised music and story), or a rehearsal for a music-story, or a discussion between scholars and experts.  This week’s episode, “The Effects of Rape, Part 2,” features host Lenore Von Stein in a conversation with psychologists working with children and a war crime investigator about recovering from the trauma of rape.

Harlem-born Alison Desir is a freelance writer, adjunct professor, certified coach, and of course, a runner. Nicknamed by her mother “Powdered Feet” after the Haitian-Creole expression, Alison is the embodiment of its sentiment—an adventurer so active, she barely leaves a footprint behind in the dust where she’s been as she whisks off to conquer her next adventure.  Host Will Sanchez talks to Alison about her foray into running and how founding Harlem Run enables her to give back to her community.

There’s talent in abundance at “GingerNewYork” this week, with author and professional photographer Thorsten von Overgaard and international singing sensation Princess Joy Villa.

A Danish writer and Leica fine art photographer specializing in portrait and documentary photography, Thorsten von Overgaard is perhaps best known for his writings about photography, and as an educator and international photo competition judge.

With an Italian father and African American mother, Joy Villa’s upbringing was a blending of cultures—she counts musicians from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Blondie to Nirvana, as musical influences. A singer/songwriter/renaissance woman, she also paints, models, acts, dances, and writes.
