September is recognized as World Alzheimer’s Month. The international campaign is aimed at raising awareness throughout the world. It challenges the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer related dementia. This Week on MNN our Community Members talk with professionals about caring for people with Alzheimer and dementia. Makilala TV is the first Filipino American talk show in the New York metro area. Their guests include artists, community leaders, innovators and emerging artists in the Filipino community. This week Makilala hosts are joined by Dr. Mary Jo Garcia-Dia, President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America and Anna Marie Manalo, a gifted pianist, violinist and composer. Anna’s journey as her mother’s caregiver was the driving force behind this episode.

Speak Up! Is a long-running show on MNN that invites guests to talk about their work in the community. On this episode host Sandra Schulte sits with Dr. Gianni Perilli. Dr. Perilli established a program at his Upper East Side church to support the caregivers of those suffering from the symptoms of dementia. In addition, Dr. Perilli discusses the a variety of activities used to help seniors maintain their cognitive abilities.
