A video editor is responsible for piecing together raw footage, sound, and graphics to create a unique and exciting story. But, before the magic of editing begins, a video editor must prepare and organize all of their media assets. Here are 3 tips for organizing your edit.

Tip #1: Catalog Your Assets
Before you ingest media into an editing platform, organize all of your assets into folders that live on an external hard drive. Create a main project folder for your files then create seven subcategory folders that correspond with the type of assets you have.

Separating your media into these folders allows you to keep track of all of your assets.

Tip # 2: Organize Media into Bins
Once you import your media into an editing platform, maintain organization with bins. Bins allow you to organize clips by dividing them into groups. Just like folders on your hard drive, you can have multiple bins inside of other bins and create a folder structure just as complex as your project requires. The bins should also correspond with the type of asset you have, but since we're in the editing software, we're going to remove " EXPORTS" and " PROJECTS"  and add a " SEQUENCES" bin.

Tip #3: Maintain Naming Conventions
A naming convention provides a set of rules for identifying digital asset so that filenames or titles are consistent and contain all of the right information. They help you store, search, and organize your files. Without naming conventions, your asset can become chaotic, making it diffcult to locate media when you need it. The naming conventions for all of your projects, sequences, and export should be consistent. For projects, we recommend including the date, story slug/ story name, and your name. For sequences and exports, we recommend using the date, story slug or story name, your name ad the version number.
