SPECIAL ELECTION RESULTS

Special Election: Assembly District 74

Housing activist Harvey Epstein wins the special election with 90 percent of the vote.

Harvey Epstein: 90%
Bryan Cooper: 5%
Adrienne Craig-Williams: 2%
Juan Pagan: 2%

The 74th Assembly District includes the East Side of Manhattan below Midtown, including the East Village and a few sections of the Lower East Side.  The seat has been vacant since this past November.  It was vacated when former Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh was sworn in as a state senator.

Mr. Epstein, a long time LES housing activist, was the Democratic candidate and favorite to win.   Republican Bryan Cooper who garnered 5 percent of the vote opposed him, along with Adrienne Craig-Williams on the Green Party line and Juan Pagan on the Reform Party line. They each received 2 percent of the vote.  There was very low turn out in the district, out of 76,195 registered voters, only 4.318 voted yesterday in the special election.

Statewide, New Yorker voted in new legislators in two Senate districts and nine Assembly districts in yesterday’s 11 special elections.

While Epstein’s win in Manhattan was for some a foregone conclusion, Democrat Shelley Mayer’s victory over Republican Julie Killian in Westchester County was an upset.  That win along with another Democratic victory in Senate District 32 in the Bronx, gives Democrats nominal control of the state Senate.

Looking at the big picture, the results are being called a ‘blue wave’ of Democratic victories that could affect the balance of the NY state senate.   And possibly be a sign of Democratic enthusiasm in the November midterm elections.
