YC Spotlight: #QueeringAbolition

As June is LGBT Awareness Month, we look back to Youth Channel coverage of the February 5th, 2015 panel discussion “Queer and Trans Prison Advocacy 101,” at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Moderated by Susan Rosenberg, human and prisoner rights advocate, the panel explored the recent increase in mass incarceration within members of the LGBTQ community, the lack of respect for gender preferences in prison, and the Pen-Pal program to connect LGBTQ prisoners with a supportive community member.

Panelists included:

·         Ceyenne Doroshow, a transgender woman who spoke of her own prison experiences

·         Emma Caterine, founding member of Black & Pink NYC, an organization that seeks to abolish prisons and create a trans-positive society; and

·         Victoria Law, free-lance writer and author of “Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women” and other books examining the treatment of female prisoners

Watch YC programming Monday through Friday at 6:00 pm on MNN4 (TWC 67, RCN 85, FiOS 36 and streaming live).
