While Dominicans have celebrated their heritage every February for decades, this year Dominican Heritage Month has been officially recognized by New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo.
This Sunday, tune in as we celebrate with a panel discussion featuring Dominican York artists, Scherezade and Iliana Emilia Garcia. Watch as the sisters talk with moderator, Rafaela “Ronnie” Billini, about their early life in the Dominican Republic, their journey to New York and the influence of their heritage on their artwork.
Scherezade is a visual artist and adjunct professor at the Parsons School of Design. Her work is included in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, El Museo del Barrio, The Housatonic Museum of Art and El Museo de Arte Moderno.
Iliana Emilia also a visual artist whose art appears exhibitions across the world including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, BRIC, Museo de Arte Moderno de El Salvador and many more. She is also a founding member of the Dominican York Proyecto Grafica printmaking collective.
