A BETTER LIFE (2011), directed by Chris Weitz, 98 min. Demian Bichir received a surprise Oscar nomination playing a gardener in East LA who struggles to protect his son from gangs as well as immigration agents. The Hollywood Reporter praised the film as “a little gem where humanity is observed with compassion, not condescension.”

MNN’s Film Series presents The Cinema of Immigration. This 10-week series explores the immigrant experience in the U.S. through films that reflect its ethnic and cultural diversity. Mark Ethan Toporek introduces each screening and leads discussion afterward.
