YC Spotlight: Multilingualism & The Changes in Immigration

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump attacked all immigrants and generalized them as “drug dealers, criminals, and rapists,” and in an Nowrasteh research study for the Cato Institute, numbers show that undocumented immigrants are about half as likely to be incarcerated than native-born Americans. Since getting elected, the president has also fought hard for a US-Mexico border wall, and now allows family separation at the border, in which parents are stripped from their children as young as 4-months old and get put in a cage at a detention camp.

While the far right argues that immigrants have nothing but crimes to offer, the economic contribution that immigrants have given the United States is undeniable. According to the National Immigration Forum, immigrants paid a whopping $328 billion in state, local, and federal taxes in 2014. So why are we as a nation, not fighting for their permanent stay in our land?
