Latin Icons Past and Present is a program dedicated to showcasing Latino Artists from diverse backgrounds. In this episode, MNN Community Member Carmen Llerena speaks with Dr. Virginia Sanchez Korrol, distinguished professor, historian and author. They talk about her latest book The Season of Rebels & Roses which tells a story of love and racial discrimination in the 1800’s. The book also explores the collaboration between Puerto Ricans and Cuban patriots in NYC, where they worked together on the printing of Jose Marti’s influential newspaper, Patria.

This festival is an explosion of art, dance, music and culture. It brings together dance companies from Africa, Peru, Honduras, Haiti, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The Radical Imagination host Jim Vrettos, is a sociologist who has taught at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Yeshiva University. In this episode, Jim welcomes his special guest Johnny Cruz to the program. Cruz is a collaborator with International Salsa Magazine, producer of Windows of Latin America, and founder and CEO of the SPAHA Salsa Museum in Spanish Harlem. This unique museum, the only one in New York dedicated to salsa music memorabilia, celebrates the rich history, culture, and profound impact of salsa on American society and its music scene.
