On Wednesday, September 19th, Hope Community, Inc. in partnership with Manhattan Neighborhood Network will screen "East Harlem Focus: A Community Facing Transition." The 6:00 pm screening at MNN Studios, 537 West 59th Street, will be followed by a public discussion on gentrification and displacement in East Harlem.

Produced by the Hope Community’s community programs department, “East Harlem Focus” is the culmination of a 12-month, community-based research project that documented a neighborhood threatened by rapid and transformative change.

MNN is happy to announce the Manhattan Neighborhood Network Community Media Grants for 2008. These grants allow MNN to further support community-based and not-for-profit organizations to incorporate video in their work as a tool for public education, outreach, advocacy or to reach new audiences.

Grants are given in three categories: Tactical Media Toolkit, Training & Production and Curatorial Media.

The Beloved Ruth Glanz, longtime MNN Producer and former MNN Board Member Passes Away

Ruth Glanz, who passed away quite unexpectedly this past week, served on Manhattan Neighborhood Network's board of directors for two terms. Her special assignment was to speak for the interests of our producers because she had been one herself for many years. AGEWISE, her program made with and about seniors, was recognized as "outstanding" at the Home Town Festival of the Alliance for Community Media and continues to be used as a model by trainers in access centers across the country.

MNN's website has gone bilingual. Now you can find most of our content in both English and Spanish. Clicking on the flags in the green area up top or on the bottom right of each page will switch your menus to English or Spanish, whichever your preference. We hope that by adding the bilingual feature we can better serve our Spanish-speaking audience.

The Schedule, News Stories, Press Releases, and Events will still only be in English.

This agreement will decide the amount and type of support MNN and the other PEG access services in the city will receive over the next 10 to 20 years. How well we will be able to serve you and the Manhattan community in the coming years will be determined by the success of these negotiations.

Watch ALBA TV only on MNN

MNN and ALBA TV, the world's first international community TV satellite network, will debut a historic programming exchange May 20th, with a special programming block, airing on MNN's Channel 67 (RCN 85) on Sunday from 9-11:30 pm. The block will feature programming made by community organizations in Nicaragua, Mexico, Ecuador, and from Latino immigrant communities here in the U.S.

The block is in anticipation of the June 2nd launch of the international satellite network, which will air programming created by, for and about communities (including NYC) in more than 11 countries in the Americas.

Third Labor's Voices Conference

On April 27th and 28th, the MNN's Community Media department participated in the Third Labor's Voices Conference. This year's theme, "Media for a New Worker's Movement", gathered labor activists from across the country and the world. MNN was represented by Denisse Andrade and Betty Yu, who had an information table at which they talked about the many ways Community Media could support the various media initiatives labor organizations are setting in motion. Over 200 people attended the conference.

Ever dream about having a regularly scheduled show on TV? MNN welcomes any sort of programming you want to make, whether it's comedy, talk shows, interviews, community issues, or even fitness and cooking shows!

Apply now through April 27 for a show for the Summer Quarter!

To apply for a series, submit a Series Timeslot Request form and pilot tape to the Programming Department (Room 205) or the Tape Library. Download and fill out a Proof of Residence form and submit it with a photocopy of your photo ID and proof of residency. Only one tape per series application. These guidelines apply for any quarter that you wish to submit a new series for.

Kids understand Save Access...why not Congress? A new PSA features New York kids extolling the virtues of free speech, and encouraging you to contact Chuck and Hilary about Save Access. We also have a Save Access PSA in Portuguese.

What's up at MNN's Youth Channel? A PSA produced by the YMIC program explores the controversy behind the notorious "N" word. And during the 2007 Grassroots Media Conference, Youth Channel taught a DIY Animation workshop, where participants made an animation piece about a heroic street-musician robot.

You can contact the producer of the program, who can answer any of those questions for you.

Simply go to our online schedule, and search for the show by channel and day. If the producer has provided contact info, simply click on the "contact" link and email away.

Most producers also provide contact information during their program. If the information is not provided, call the Scheduling Department at 212-757-2670 ext. 307.

Please note that not all producers have contact information available.

MNN's new Video Archive is up and running! The section is still in the beginning stages, but we're adding videos as often as possible.

You'll find MNN-produced videos from years and months past, including Youth Channel productions, How2 TV, and even show promos. Community Media has videos from its Save Access campaign and from pro-immigrant rallies. The En Español section highlights videos that are either fully or partially in Spanish. You'll also find student projects from MNN classes such as iMovie and Express Studio, and see the diversity of voices producers-in-training are bringing to MNN.

Connections is a series of “encuentros” or gatherings to include the community in envisioning how Manhattan Neighborhood Network will become an addition to the cultural work in East Harlem. Art for Change will also take part of this initiative as they begin their process of becoming a center for the convergence of art and activism. After three years of working in el barrio, MNN will be establishing a more permanent presence in the neighborhood. This is an opportunity to shape what the new facility will offer and answer any questions community members may have.

Are you still submitting your programs in VHS or SVHS? MNN is revving up to go fully digital, so we're encouraging all producers to upgrade your program format. Fall 07 is the very last quarter we will be accepting shows on VHS/S-VHS tapes.

All tapes, without exception, for Winter 07 must be MiniDV or MiniDVCAM. If you hand in a tape (series or singles) for Winter 07 airdate (December 16 -March 17) that is not in MiniDV or MiniDVCAM formats, it will not air. Likewise, we will ONLY accept series application tapes and promos on MiniDV or MiniDVCAM tape beginning Winter 07.

MNN Remembers Zak

JOSEPH BERNARD ZAK 1926-2006Joseph Bernard Zak, the elderly punk rocker and member of the MNN show "Team Spider," died on December 13th at St. Luke's hospital. He was 80 years old. Zak prided himself on being the “Most Prolific Songwriter in the History of the World," writing approximately 30,000-40,000 original song lyrics. Zak was born in 1926, in upstate New York, and was apparently raised by Franciscan priests. He studied to become a priest himself, mastering several languages and religious texts. His sharp tongue soon got him expelled from the brotherhood and he was forced to join the Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II. Zak went on to become a teacher and mentor at a home for delinquent boys, a night watchman and a hotel doorman before joining Team Spider. Zak's legacy lives on...

Looking Back and Moving Forward: A Year in the Fight to Save Public Access TV!

Back in September 2005, a cluster of anti-Community Access TV legislation emerged in the Washington—and we faced the greatest threat to Public Access TV in its thirty-five year history. Today, after fifteen months of campaigning and organizing by MNN’s producers, supporters, saveaccess.org, and our community allies, the threat is still real—but we have a clearer understanding of what may happen in the future. In recent months, since the Congressional Bills have been stalled, the telephone companies have been putting their efforts into lobbying for a statewide franchise system—and attack Public Access TV and the local franchising in this way.

MNN's Community Media Grant Program now in its 14th year, just announced its grantees for 2007. Community Media will allocate $170,000 to support community-based groups throughout Manhattan in learning how to produce or expand their skills for television programming production.

The Program’s mission is two-fold: It enables groups to increase their media capacity in reaching to a broader constituency, while providing new and fresh programming for the channel.

From Dec. 1-10 MNN presented a special program series called AIDS @ 25 that focused on the need to sustain awareness of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. We featured never-before-seen programs such as "AIDS in the Black Community" and "SIDA en la Comunidad Latina."

You can still catch repeats of the series programming on our four channels, and we hope you can take the time to fill out our important survey to voice your opinion on our programming. "Eye Am: Women Behind the Lens" is seeking short film/video submissions for the Winter Season. The first episode of the new season will begin January 3, 2007. This monthly series seeks to highlight women's memoir and the ways in which women have used film and video to negotiate the construction of "Self" (however you wish to interpret that).

We are looking for diverse works from all genres that are written, directed, and/or produced by women. The pieces should be short, not more than 30 minutes in length. Spread the word to anyone who may be interested in submitting!

Programming for World Aids Day

As you may know, Dec. 1st, 2006 is World AIDS Day. MNN is hosting a number of programs in honor of this event and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosis of the disease.

The program series will begin on Dec 1st and end on Dec. 10th. We are asking community groups individuals to submit programming on issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. We are also seeking older material as well, to chart the course of the epidemic in our communities over the past 25 years.
