365 Days of Marching: The Amadou Diallo Story

THE AMADOU DIALLO STORY

The streets of New York City have certainly witnessed its share of acts of civil disobedience, violence and rebellion. Dating back as far as the Draft Riots of 1863, very often, the disenfranchised would take to the streets when opposing the government’s unfair policies and practices. Seven years ago when an unarmed African immigrant by the name of Amadou Diallo was shot at 41 times (hit 19 times) by 4 New York City Police Officers, the people took to the streets charging the NYPD with police brutality. Over the next two years that followed, a series of marches and protests was set into motion that would forever change the lives of New Yorkers.

Bye Bye, Africa (Bye Bye, Africa). 1998. Chad. Screenplay by Mahamat Saleh Haroun. Haroun plays himself in this autobiographical drama in which a film director, born in Chad but now living and working in France, receives a phone call late one night with the news that his mother has died. The director goes home for the first time in a decade to discover that he barely recognizes the impoverished land of his birth. His father has little understanding of or respect for his work, so the director decides to make a film in Chad. However, it's all but impossible to secure financing. The director presses on, auditioning local actors and reuniting with his former girlfriend (Aicha Yelena). In Chadian Arabic, French; English subtitles.

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH chronicles the lives of three same-sex couples fighting to marry the partners they love—and tragically, one couple's heart breaks as its dream dies at the cruel hands of ALS.

In 2002, seven couples in the state of New Jersey filed a lawsuit in hopes of legalizing same-sex marriage. IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH closely chronicles the journey of three of these activist couples.

The most poignant characters in the story are Marilyn and Diane, partners of 14 years, who were dedicated to fighting for the marriage right they desperately desired. Before their dream could be realized, Marilyn was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

B.Z. travels to a Palestinian refugee camp and to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, and to the more familiar neighborhoods of Jerusalem where he meets seven Palestinian and Israeli children.
Though the children live only 20 minutes apart, they exist in completely separate worlds; the physical, historical and emotional obstacles between them run deep. Promises explores the nature of these boundaries and tells the story of a few children who crossed the lines to meet their neighbors.

Screening: Antonia

Start: Jun 21 2007 - 2:00pm

Antônia. 2006. Brazil. Directed by Tata Amaral. With Negra Li, Cindy, Leilah Moreno, Quelynah. In Vila Brasilandia, on the outskirts of São Paulo, four black girls—friends since childhood—struggle to fulfill their dream of living off of their music. After much opposition, their group, Antônia, seems on the verge of success, when their hopes are dashed again by the horrid daily grind of poverty, violence, and chauvinism. With great music, charisma to burn, and an easy rapport between the four actresses, this story about struggle and resilience blends believably into the real environment of the favelas (shanty towns) and the accompanying dreams of a better life. Portuguese; English subtitles. 90 min.

With great music, charisma to burn, and an easy rapport between the four actresses, this story about struggle and resilience blends believably into the real environment of the favelas (shanty towns) and the accompanying dreams of a better life. Portuguese; English subtitles. 90 min.

Their war is a prelude for the even more challenging battles they fight upon returning home – with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government. As these battles take shape, each soldier becomes a new kind of hero, bearing witness and giving support to other veterans, and learning to fearlessly wield the most powerful weapon of all - the truth.

New York City is one of the most influential centers of alternative media in the United States and the home of numerous community media organizations. For the past four decades, Third World Newsreel (TWN), Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) and Paper Tiger TV (PTTV) have provided New Yorkers with a unique space to voice alternative views on social and political issues, producing documentaries about a variety of topics, including anti-war demonstrations in the 1960s, the role of local media in international affairs and the need to save public access cable.

Opening Reception: Why I Ride: The Art of Bicycling in New York

Start: May 3 2007 - 5:00pm

Celebrate bicyclists and bike culture at this opening reception for the "Why I Ride" exhibition at the Lower Eastside Girls Club, Trackstar, NYC Velo, and Bicycle Habitat. “Why I Ride” is an independently organized multi-venue exhibition that will showcase New York artists working in photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture or installation, who are inspired by the freedom and mobility that the bicycle makes possible in a congested metropolis. These artists view interactions with neighbors and strangers — both friendly and otherwise — as preferable to the isolation that grows out of our sprawling, auto-dependent environment.

Their goal: to live out the epic gang warfare movie known as The Warriors. During the all-night race from the Bronx to Coney Island, riders got lost, blood was shed, police were outwitted, and countless brain cells were destroyed. Most of what took place that night was thankfully never to be discussed again until...Warriors: The Bike Race.

A Prairie Home Companion. 2006. USA. Directed by Robert Altman. Screenplay by Garrison Keillor. With Keillor, Kevin Kline, Virginia Madsen.
Sham-e yeknafare (Dinner for One). 1995. France/Denmark/Spain/Sweden. From the compilation Lumière and Company. A woman (voice of Isabelle Huppert) leaves an answering machine message. 1 min.

Ten. 2002. Iran/France. With Mania Akbari, Amin Maher. The director's favorite setting, the automobile, serves as the perfect inside/outside, confined space for conversations between women. In ten separate scenes, six women at different stages of life—including the driver, a divorcee—open up about their emotional lives and attitudes. In the opening sequence, the sole male, the driver's petulant young son, sets the scene for the women his "mother" lends an ear to with a conversation that is a true example of communication difficulties. 93 min.

This is What Democracy Looks Like (1999) and This is What Free Trade Looks Like (2003)

During the 1999 World Trade Organization summit in Seattle, activists gathering to promote economic justice managed to shut down the WTO during a days-long demonstration. This is What Democracy Looks Like tells the story from the hearts and lenses of more than 100 activists who turned their cameras on the police.

Free Screening, Free Popcorn at Vox Pop Coffeehouse

A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles advocating the causes of their religious movement. Jesus Camp follows a group of young children to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire Summer Camp," where kids are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in God's army and are schooled in how to take back America for Christ. The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recurits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America's political future.
