THE AMADOU DIALLO STORY

The streets of New York City have certainly witnessed its share of acts of civil disobedience, violence and rebellion. Dating back as far as the Draft Riots of 1863, very often, the disenfranchised would take to the streets when opposing the government’s unfair policies and practices. Seven years ago when an unarmed African immigrant by the name of Amadou Diallo was shot at 41 times (hit 19 times) by 4 New York City Police Officers, the people took to the streets charging the NYPD with police brutality. Over the next two years that followed, a series of marches and protests was set into motion that would forever change the lives of New Yorkers.

GENERAL HIGH-LEVEL DESCRIPTION OF JOB: Provide accounting and clerical support in the Business Office in performing multiple duties related to the financial management of Manhattan Neighborhood Network. Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and pay close attention to detail.

Qualifications
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Providing administrative assistance to the Director of Finance & Administration, Business Manager and Executive Director
• Assisting the Executive Director and Director of Finance & Administration to facilitate Board meetings, communications and other general Board administration issues
• Reviewing, processing and recording payment requests, travel and expense reports, and monthly credit card statement receipts to ensure that documentation is complete and accurate and the timeliness of vendor payments.
• Maintaining records, reports and files in an organized manner.
• Communicating with appropriate staff when documentation is unclear, incomplete or incorrect
• Preparing checks for distribution to payees
• Responding to inquiries regarding the status of payments
• Assist in processing payroll
• Assist in developing and maintaining administrative and Board files
• Perform receptionist duties when needed
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
• Associates or Bachelors degree in accounting preferred
• Minimum 2+ years experience with accounts payable processing
• Knowledge of QuickBooks
• Non profit experience preferred
• Strong computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel
• Strong writing, communication and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of Board process
• Capacity to work as part of a team and independently
• Ability to manage diverse interests, priorities, and projects

Grants are given in three categories: Tactical Media Toolkit, Training & Production and Curatorial Media.

Ruth Glanz, who passed away quite unexpectedly this past week, served on Manhattan Neighborhood Network's board of directors for two terms. Her special assignment was to speak for the interests of our producers because she had been one herself for many years. Haroun plays himself in this autobiographical drama in which a film director, born in Chad but now living and working in France, receives a phone call late one night with the news that his mother has died. The director goes home for the first time in a decade to discover that he barely recognizes the impoverished land of his birth. His father has little understanding of or respect for his work, so the director decides to make a film in Chad. However, it's all but impossible to secure financing. In 2002, seven couples in the state of New Jersey filed a lawsuit in hopes of legalizing same-sex marriage. IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH closely chronicles the journey of three of these activist couples.

The most poignant characters in the story are Marilyn and Diane, partners of 14 years, who were dedicated to fighting for the marriage right they desperately desired. Before their dream could be realized, Marilyn was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
