This past Wednesday, March 10th - MNN Training Dept teamed up with Programming to present a new seminar for public access producers.

Promo Video Creation, taught by Rahum Brown, Programming's Marketing Coordinator (and all around Renaissance Man) offered solid tips and tricks to access producers to help them create their own compelling 30 second promotional spot - a critical tool in attracting more viewers to programming.

Some reviews:

"It was very informative and Rahum gave a great presentation" NB

"I learned a lot - you really can get creative with 30 seconds!" LB

"Very good workshop - you should have more" FP

Beeps Slam Cable Delay

All five of New York City’s borough presidents warned this week of “serious consequences for the residents of our boroughs” caused by the 18-month delay in new cable Franchise Agreements between the Bloomberg Administration and the incumbent cable operators, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision.

In a March 3rd letter, the five BPs or “beeps” took special aim at the urgent need for the Bloomberg Administration to ensure that Community Access Organizations like MNN, who are operating off deals struck in 1998, have the necessary financial support to meet community needs.

Watch Special Programming Celebrating Black History Month in February

Black History Month is a remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. The remembrance was founded in 1926 by United States historian Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week". Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. (Source: Wikipedia)

All month long, the Community Media and External Affairs Departments have curated a special series that celebrates and addresses issues facing the African American community.

New York Film/Video Council and Manhattan Neighborhood Network presents
"Public Access 2.0 = You(r)Tube" Panel
Friday, December 4th at 6:30pm

@ Manhattan Neighborhood Network
537 West 59th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) in Manhattan
Subway: A/B/C/D/1 to 59th Street-Columbus Circle

Public Access Television was designed as an "electronic greenspace" to ensure airwaves and support for local individual and non-profit voices in a time of corporate control of the airwaves. How does this "electronic greenspace" thrive under recent hostile legislation and the flowering of the internet age?

Electeds Call for FCC Action on PEG

Senate hearings took place this week for Meredith Attwell Baker (R) and Mignon Clyburn (D), nominees for two vacant positions on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). If confirmed, they will join newly appointed Chair, Julius Genachowski (D) and current Commissioners Robert McDowell (R) and Michael Copps (D), who has been serving as Acting Chair.

A key issue of public concern for the FCC is the equitable treatment of public, educational and governmental (PEG) access by cable and video providers. This week, Michael Copps commented on that issue during an interview with Multichannel News:

Rep. Serrano Urges Action on PEG

Public Access was discussed as a key concern at a U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing held last month on the Federal Communications Commission's 2010 budget.

Subcommittee Chairman, Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) and Acting FCC Chairman, Michael Copps, agreed about the importance of Public, Educational and Government (PEG) channels and Serrano urged action on the PEG Access Petitions for Declaratory Ruling before the Commission.

In his written statement to the Subcommittee, Acting Chairman Copps said:

Hundreds Weigh In On Industry Treatment of PEG Channels

More than 770 comments have been filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in response to Petitions for Declaratory Ruling against AT&T's U-Verse Public, Educational and Government access channels now being rolled-out nationwide.

ATT’s U-Verse system dumps PEG channels down to a “Channel 99” menu service, where once you access the channel, you have to scroll down a hierarchy of choices in order to access your municipalities' feed. The system is vastly inferior to local commercial channels and, among other things, doesn’t have closed captioning, a viable Emergency Alert system or DVR capacity.

Cable Deals Fuzzy

They are some of the most valuable contracts in New York City history - easily worth more than $25 billion.

They deal with a service that nearly 2 million city households use each day, one that provokes routine complaints about skyrocketing costs and poor customer treatment.

I'm talking about New York's cable television contracts, which expired back in September.

Public Access Centers Slam AT&T

Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) joined a nationwide coalition of community media groups in filing a petition with the Federal Communications Commission on January 30, charging that telecom giant AT&T discriminates against local public access channels with its U-verse cable TV system.

The petition asks the FCC to rule that AT&T's Public, Educational and Government (PEG) programming violates the 1984 Cable Act, as well as FCC rulings and policies.

"Relegating local, non-profit media channels to second-class status is a disservice to the public and violates both the spirit and letter of the law," said Helen Soule, executive director of the Alliance for Community Media in a press release.

Cable Rates Skyrocketing in NYC

Despite the promise of lower prices with the entry of Verizon into the New York cable market, cable television prices are rising fast, according to a new report from Crain's newspaper.

Cablevision, which has about 3.1 million TV customers in the New York metropolitan area, will increase the price of cable TV by an average of 3.5% next year, according to a Nov. 9 article in the business newspaper. Time Warner Cable, with about 1.1 million New York City customers, is expected to follow with similar rate hikes.

Crain's says that Verizon has increased its TV rates by 12%, to $47.99, since entering the New York metro market two years ago.

Hemispheric Collaboration: Internet Bill of Rights

I'm downtown at what's being called an historic event: a real time, intercontinental collaborative construction of an Internet Bill of Rights which is taking place in New York and simultaneously in South America. This collaborative effort to create a consensus of agreement on a set of essential rights for the Internet was done using custom software that allowed the participants, working in small groups, to make suggestions for inclusion in an Internet Bill of Rights, edit each other suggestions, and then 'endorse' any groups contributions by adding their group's icon to any of the suggestions. The collaboration was also faciliated by simultaneous machine translation between English and Spanish.

The Internet is Serious Business

This isn't the first time an alien has visited earth on a fact-finding mission. They've been coming here for hundreds of years, studying our planetary communications systems. The alien is grey with elongated fingers and toes, has an insatiable curiosity, and is the star of the CUP produced film "The Internet is Serious Business" which had it's premiere at Anthology Film Achives tonight.

High Def Expo is Def

I'm at the HD Expo today. It's the first time it's been held in New York (it will also be repeated in LA next month<>) and is happening at the Waterfront, which you seasoned NYers may remember from it's halcyon days as The Tunnel, and scene of more than a few filmings. Whenever a TV show (or film) needed to have a scene in a club, they invariable filmed it in The Tunnel.

FiOS Goes Live Today

Today Verizon officially rolls out FiOS TV here in New York City. They're having a schmancy ceremony at Grand Central which will be webcast (not on MNN.) As you may known, NYC granted Verizon a television franchise in the city back in May which was just confirmed on July 16th by the New York Public Service Commission. As part of the deal, Verizon will pay franchise fees for use of city infrastructure, a portion of which goes to fund MNN, which provides universal access and programming to all Manhattan residents (other burroughs each have their own networks.)

Verizon has also indicated they will quickly be moving into web video: Web video over FiOS

Hurrah! It's Network Mapping Day!

Using Intermapper to visualise all the nodes of the network here produces a pretty picture, though logically it doesn't have a *lot* of resemblance to the actual network topology. It's really just mapping nodes. (Though I was surprised to notice it recognises devices by protocol, well, printers anyway.)

The crescent on the upper right are the existing streaming servers in the DMZ, although Intermapper is oddly assigning them staff network IPs as well. Hmm, I should probably look into that. And I will just as soon as Intermapper finishes... mapping our entire class B network. Of which we are using fewer than a dozen addresses. (Picture after the jump…)

Broadband Advisory Committee meeting next Wednesday.

Next Wednesday, July 30th at 11:00am there will be a briefing
from the Mayor's Office and Diamond Consultants for the Broadband
Advisory Committee regarding the Bloomberg Administration's plans for
bridging the digital divide in New York City.

The Broadband Advisory Committee was established in 2005 with the
passage of Introduction 625-A creating a joint public broadband
commission to advise the Mayor and the City Council of New York on how
the resources of City government can be used to stimulate the private
market so that residents and businesses of New York City have more
options in terms of high-speed Internet access. The goal of the
committee is to educate the general public about broadband and the

Rule 23: Delete anything you don't understand.

First thing this morning our new and most xlnt SA tells me he found the biggest offender on the staff file share-- meaning a single directory that's using up 10% of the available space (which is pathetically small to begin with, but that's another story.) It's a folder in our own department. "Oh that's just some stuff from Jacob" says our support dude, and before I can even take a looksee SA's blown it out.

Because it's not like we really *need anything* from the guy who who designed the whole network infrastructure and current development plan, right?

Thank ye gods for Restropect.

ACM 2008

Just got back from a week in Washington at the Alliance for Community Media conference. Well I got back on Saturday but I pretty much took all of yesterday to recuperate.

The best sessions at the conference were, of course, the Drupal one, and also the last session on Social Media 2.0. (It was nice that social media wasn't looked on as the red headed step child of the conference this year.)

It would have been great however if the conference had had working WiFi so participants could have tweeted the session highlights in real time. That obviously works better than trying to 'summize' after the fact. (btw Twitter just bought summize today, which you probably heard.)

From July 9th to July 12th, Manhattan Neighborhood Network and hundreds of non-profit organizations and public access stations will be in Washington, D.C., for the Alliance for Community Media's (ACM) National Conference. The conference is being held in order to educate how community media and public access television can be preserved for the general public.
