School is out and the 4th of July is just around the corner, which means lots of fun in the sun for New York City youth. Next week on the Youth Channel, we’re celebrating Independence Day with programming that looks back at U.S. history and the issues we still face today.

The Youth Channel airs programming every weeknight from 6-7pm on MNN 4 (FiOS 36, RCN 85, Spectrum 67 & 1998) and MNN HD (Spectrum 1993). To learn about MNN’s Youth Media Center and the work they produce, click here.

YESFEST: Between The Lies
Opening Act’s year-long theater programs at 40 public high schools culminate at YESfest, a week-long festival of original work. In 2017 these student-created and performed plays took on topics ranging from gentrification, history repeating itself, fear of outsiders, and secrets – and are always the highlight of our year! Between The Lies is stage play performed by students of the year-long Open Act program.

This All-American High School Film Festival pick shares the story of a 5-year-old named Rivers, whose wish to train at the Star Wars Jedi Training Camp was granted by Reedy High School and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Night Cap, episode 12
This NightCap Spotlight special features singer/songwriter Laura Rizzotto who describes her sound as "pop with a growl."

Laura hails from the beautiful Rio De Janeiro where she got an auspicious start in music. At the age of 15, Laura struck her first record deal with Universal Music Brazil. Her debut album, “Made in Rio,” garnered her acclaim throughout Brazil and landed her the opportunity to open up for Demi Lovato. Tune in to hear Laura's journey from Brazil to the Big Apple. She will also be performing some of the tracks from her sophomore album, "Reason to Stay."
