Nizar Hamdoon, (RIP) the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary General Boutros Boutros- Ghali 14 September 1992. Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Hamdoon was Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a post he held from September 1987. At that post, he supervised Iraq's bilateral relations with North and South America, western Europe, Africa and Asia. He was Iraq's Ambassador to the United States from 26 November 1984, the day full diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored. Mr. hamdoon joined the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1983, becoming head of the Iraqi Interests Section in Washington, DC, later that year. Prior to that , he had been Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Information, from 1981 to 1983. He also worked at the Arab Ba'ath Party National Command, from 1970 to 1981. Mr. Hamdoon was educated at Baghdad University, obtaining a bachelor's degree in architecture and town planning, in 1967. He did his military service as an architect in the Iraqi Air Force, from 1968 to 1970. In February 1990, Mr. Hamdoon founded the Society of Iraqi Architects. Born in Baghdad on 18 May 1944, Mr. Hamdoon is married with two daughters. National Holiday: 17 July.
