Screening of Shameless: The Art of Disability, with star and humorist David Roche live in person!
The film: Award-winning director Bonnie Sherr Klein returns to filmmaking after a life-altering stroke in 1987.
From Klein’s unique perspective as an outsider who suddenly finds herself a part of disability culture, she brings the audience into her new world. Art, activism and disability are the starting point in what unfolds as a funny and intimate portrait of five surprising individuals, including Klein herself.
The series: The disTHIS! Film Series, sponsored by the Disabilities Network of NYC and ConnecTV, showcases quality narrative, shorts, documentary and feature films with disability themes beyond clichés. On the first Wednesday of every month, the disTHIS! Film Series screens movies which spotlight pride instead of pity, character over charity and direction rather than diagnosis. Screenings will be funny, sexy and maybe even a little startling; always provocative, never quite what you'd expect. Or as the slogan says, disability through a whole new lens.
Snacks are served at all screenings and the space is wheelchair accessible. Whenever possible all films will include ASL interpretation, open captions and/or audio description. Watch this space for announcements.
