The Community Media Workshop Series 2008

 

A series of workshops designed for groups who are interested in incorporating video in their organizing, outreach and advocacy efforts.


FEBRUARY

Planning Your Video Project: Lessons from the Field
This workhop features an experienced mediamaker to offer advice on the most important step in media creation: pre-production planning. From identifying an audience to storyboarding your project, get expert tips of the trade.

Grassroots Fundraising for Community Media
This panel will bring local funders who are interested in community media initiatives in a conversation with groups who have successfully secured funding for similar projects. We'll also feature groups which have used non-traditional grassroots fundraising strategies to get their projects off the ground.

Audio and Lighting Workshop
Audio is a component commonly overlooked yet a huge piece of your project. This workshop will give participants some practical tips to ensure the audio and lighting of your project is as gorgeous as it deserves to be without adding any extra equipment. This workshop will give you detailed tips on how to best capture video when when lighting is not ideal. Some practical exercises will illustrate how to do this effectively.

What's Fair about Fair Use?
Get the lowdown on copyright and fair use of media from experts in the field. We'll discuss use of music, images and videos and give resources to find them in the public domain.

"Going Beyond the Talking Head"
Is your organization looking to create dynamic video that goes beyond the talking head interviews? Then this workshop is for you. Get in touch with your creative side, as the panel's experts help you explore other genres and techniques to drive your message home.

Using your footage effectively
If you find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of footage you have to produce a 28min piece for MNN, this session will guide you through the process of story cohesion, the prioritizing of the message and storytelling. Participants will have a chance to collaboratively build a story using pre-existing footage.

Distribution 101 -- Grassroots Outlets and Film Festivals
This panel will cover various grassroots media that you can use to distribute your piece, from public access TV to DVD distribution for policymakers, to community screenings and film festivals. Panelists will feature real life examples of innovative grassroots media distribution strategies.
